Video Review: Natalie La Rose & Jeremih “Somebody” 

Against a chain link fence decorated with lavender flowers, Natalie La Rose says her name. She stands in the doorway of her white mansion. She runs her feet through a puddle of water. Meanwhile, Jeremih is at dive bar where she is dancing among the pale blue laser lights.

She walks out of the mansion with her friends, surveying the scene. She sits in her bedroom, surrounded by stuffed teddy bears.

In her driveway, she begins to dance with all her friends. She dances at the dive club and flirts with Jeremih. She walks through a club with replications of famous statues, holding strobe lights. Every so often, she stands next to Jeremih.

There isn’t really anything more to tell. However, the outfits are worth making it through the entire video. By the house, she’s wearing a mid-riff baring, sleeveless top and jeans, with purple checkered flannel tied around her waist. It is the most 90s outfit.  With Jeremih, she’s wearing a long-sleeved white crop top. By the chain link fence, she is wearing faded overalls with a white, lace bralette. Again, it is a 90s outfit but the bralette modernizes it. At the dive club, she wears a lavender crop top with matching ruffled skirt that is more early 2000s. At the club with the statues, she’s wearing a metallic silver dress (that sometimes looks like velour in the light) that should’ve been featured more. In her bedroom, she’s wearing a big pink bow and a fuchsia tank top. Unfortunately, it makes her look 12 years old.

The video could’ve been so much more than pretty outfits on display. The statue club is by far the most visually interesting of the video and it only gets maybe about 30 seconds of screentime at most. Jeremih and La Rose exude teamwork: she is the playful flirt, he the serious starmaking best friend. They complement each other well. More of those scenes would’ve been welcomed and La Rose’s scenes by herself by the laser lights could’ve been edited out. She does exhibit a charismatic personality but it’s not enough to overpower the unintentional fashion show and unnecessary backgrounds.
