The crew puts the finishing touches on the stage. The director calls out “roll camera” while Bruno Mars sits at the piano bench. Once he begins to play, the stage turns dark.
As the camera inches closer, it reveals a glass of whiskey set on top of the piano. It disappears out of the frame while Mars sings into the microphone, while his image fades and then finally resting on his fingers.
On a platform, a woman appears, alone.A single spotlight turns on, it’s flashes of light forming a star behind Mars. Mars’ image is divided into three, as his head faces each direction.
Meanwhile, a crew member focuses the monitor. A crying woman’s face appears, distraught that he abandoned for her his own selfish needs. The reels turn as the video is being recorded. Mars studies the keys for a moment. On the platform, the woman holds her arms by her chest and looks down at the ground.
Mars’ images are divided again into three but now his two images look right at him. The image then divides up again and disappear by the bridge.
Behind Mars, the endless circle turns an electric blue and then turns off. A few seconds later, it’s back on, but a softer, midnight blue.
Once he finishes the song, he walks off the stage, sipping on his whiskey, drinking his regret away.
Bruno Mars is an excellent performer. When he is on stage, he can immediately get people’s attention. But have him sit down on the piano and he is another singer trying to out to prove he has talent.
Wearing the sunglasses only masks his emotions when he should be showing how he wrecked and broken he is. It’s meant to be simple but ends up being lazy instead. There isn’t any action going on and relies on Mars’ presence alone. However, all his charisma and intensity is dulled by sitting. When he takes a sip of the whiskey at the end, it’s a huge deal since it’s the only telling character moment and well, something actually happens. But the song’s over and he leaves the impression he’s another pop singer aiming for credibility.
