Underneath the fiery orange-lit stage, the orchestra warms up. Five microphones and wooden chairs are on the stage. In the shadow, a man carries a bag. The orchestra takes their seats.
The audience waits for the first act to begin. A young man reads the program.
On stage, LaTocha starts to sing. Kandi, Tamika, and Tameka stand at their microphones, arm at their sides. The young man nods his head to the music.
About six months before, the young man was stuck in traffic. It was a nasty day outside. The rain reduced visibility on the roads, causing accidents on several main streets, extending his drive.
A sad smile crosses a young woman’s face. Wearing a veil, her mother tells her she’s a beautiful bride who will make a wonderful wife. She looks up at her mother, who nods her head.
In the car, the young man sticks his head out the window to get a better look at the traffic. It’s bumper-to-bumper for at least two miles.
The young woman cries into her tissue. She composes herself and says she can walk down the aisle. She puts the veil over her face, breaking out in tears again.
The young man gets out of his car in the pouring rain. The young woman sobs as she walks down the aisle. She sees the rose petals and nausea hits her. Family and friends turn to look at her, smiling. With heavy feet, she walks to her man. The minister grins at her. Her man gazes at her while the minister talks about love. Tamika sings the bridge.
The young man runs in the street and to the church. He opens the doors, drenched. She turns around. The groom’s face sinks. She runs down the aisle, holding the top of her veil and leaps into the young man’s arms. The crestfallen man realizes he didn’t really have her.
Wearing red robes, the choir behind them sings while shimmery confetti sprinkles the stage.
The young man continues to nod his head. The young woman grins as she sits beside him and rests her head on his shoulder.
The audience claps.
Xscape are a group of four women affected by love in a stage play. Each member is connected through the men they date. LaTocha is the lead, stuck in a loveless relationship and thinking of another man. Tamika dates the man LaTocha still loves and knows his heart is somewhere else. Kandi tempts LaTocha’s fiance. Tameka is the best friend of the second young man, who dated him at one time.
The drama isn’t farfetched for the young man in the audience. For years, he loved the young woman from afar. A week before she was to be married, he expressed his feelings. She told him no, she couldn’t. She’s with her fiance now and he loves her. Deep down, he knew she was afraid. He wish he could break her of the fear.
On the day of her wedding, he decided to get out of the town and try to forget. However, during the traffic jam, he begin to think of what would happen if he didn’t try one last time. Stopping the wedding didn’t seem like such a crazy idea. It was a last resort. Maybe she it will make her rethink her future. Fortunately for him, she choose him.
Xscape performing provide a buffer to the drama, allowing the emotion to get through rather than the situation.
