Portugal. The Man ambles into a junkyard, crammed with rows of cars.
At a club, lit in red, he sits on a couch, watching a cartoon. He stumbles around, seeing a woman sing in the corner. A topless doll with her arm is displayed on a shelf next to a carnation. A man with a pig’s face stands behind, holding a beer. He leans against a man, who punches him. A white line is drawn on the man’s body on the pavement.
After sitting on top of one of the pick-up trucks, he begins to dance in the junkyard. The stars fall as a man plays the saxophone while standing on a car. A spotlight shines on Portugal. The Man while two doctors dance next to him. He watches a movie on television.
As he moves his head to the music, a couple has sex in a blood red lit car. Two businessman on motorcycles twist their hands, causing the doctors to crumple to the ground. A commercial for a local lawyer plays on the television. An African-American woman sings and dances to the music while an African-American male sits on the car, wearing a hoodie. A Muslim man reads a burning Info Wars newspaper.
He sits back, watching a commercial stating “Fight back! Fight back!”
With stars falling upwards to the sky and pig men, the figures in the baroque world represent the current political climate. Portugal. The Man is the everyday person trying to get by in his low-paying job in the United States. which has declined as of late.
Awkward and isolated, he visits a club where a pig man, who is the symbol of misogyny, continues to tower behind him. He tries to move away but the pig man blocks him, breathing into his space.
Back in the junkyard, which seems to be a symbol for the United States, two businessmen strike at doctors, destroying national health care. The newspaper Info Wars burns with anger and hate as a Muslim reads stereotypes of himself. An African-American man is first seen in shadow and wears a hoodie, signifying support for Black Lives Matter. While many of the symbols seem obvious, the African-American man sitting on the hood of the car is a layered image, provoking a discussion.
Nonetheless, some symbols aren’t given any further explanation. The topless doll rests by a carnation. It’s a provocative image without any context. Whether it’s connected to the pig man is uncertain. The television commercial urging people to protest and march for their rights is a passive statement, weakening the message into a bottled advertising campaign.
