Video Review: Ella Mai “Boo’d Up”

A Lyft driver drops off Ella Mai, her boyfriend (Donnell Blaylock, Jr.), his best friend (Khalid) and his girlfriend (Alissa Ashley) at a theme park. She sits on some stuffed soccer balls inside a toy machine. Hair up in a bun, she puts her hand on her boyfriend’s shoulder as they walk.

She walks around the arcade, passing the skee-ball machines. She holds the golf club and points to the hole. Her boyfriend puts her around her waist between holes.

His best friend and girlfriend laugh as they race past them on the go-kart track. A young woman (Kamaiayh) pumps her arm in the air as she lags behind the group. Back at the arcade, she tears off dozens of tickets from a game. She stands up on the go-kart.

She and his best friend’s girlfriend spin in tubes on the lazy river ride. Inside the toy machine, she throws a ball towards the claw. She walks by herself in the park. Inside the arcade, she lies on one of the skee-ball lanes. She touches her boyfriend on the chest and plays another hole of miniature golf.

Rating: 4/5

Ella Mai and her boyfriend sit on the couch and turn on the television. They binge-watch a show and fall asleep. He wakes her up about 8 a.m. and starts to get breakfast ready. In the afternoon, they grocery shop. He takes a nap and she puts the groceries away. She vacuums the family room and reads a magazine for a while. At about 5:30 p.m., they make dinner and eat. As they put the dishes in the dishwashers, he suggests they should have a date night with his best friend. They hadn’t hung out for a long time. She says it’s something she would like to do.

On their date night, Mai and his best friend’s girlfriend chat in the car ride to the theme park. His best friend’s girlfriend recommends a movie to her. Mai shows her several funny videos on her phone. At the theme park, they race each other in a friendly go-kart competition.

In their moments alone, he kisses her and holds her. They hold hands and stare into one another’s eyes. She rests her head on his shoulder as they walk and thanks him for a great night. He squeezes her hand and tells her he’s never been happier.
