Video Review: Shawn Mendes “If I Can’t Have You”

In black-and-white, Shawn Mendes lies on a couch with his arm behind his head. He sits up and puts on his jacket.  A background of the CN Tower hangs over the couch inside the studio.

The camera tilts as he walks to a piano. He sits at the bench and plays the piano. He walks over to a mattress and takes off his jacket. He lies on the bed and turns his head to see a young woman sleeping next to him.

He sings into the microphone as the camera tilts again. He takes off his jacket.

He ties his shoes while he sits on a bench. He gets up and walks by a small choir. He steps on a treadmill and runs.

Rating: 1/5

Shawn Mendes stares at the CN Tower from his apartment. He puts his hands in his pocket and sighs. His crush is such a good friend. He hasn’t seen her in a few months. They’ve been both working non-stop. He wants to call her and ask her out on a date.

He sits at the piano and writes a song. He sends the file to her and asks her for her opinion. She responds that she loves it and wishes she could hang out with him. He opens the door and a young woman from his last tour walks in. She gives him a hug and they kiss. After they make out, she falls asleep in his bed. He looks at her, thinking of his crush.

During the week, he records the song in the studio. He meets the members of the choir who were added and tells them they did a great job. He schedules with a meeting with the producer to listen to the all the tracks. The producer tells him he’s going to make the record company a few million again.

He changes in the locker room of the gym. While running on the treadmill at 3 a.m., he watches the pundits talk on the cable news shows. From the corner of his eye, he watches the young woman at the front desk try not to look as he wipes the sweat off his arms. He flexes his arm for her and winks. Back in the locker room, he calls his driver to pick him up.

In the backseat, he sees a McDonald’s and drools. He almost tells his driver to stop. Adjusting to his new diet has been tough. The craving for greasy, overcooked food hasn’t gone away. Even on his limited cheat days, he monitors what he eats. At least he isn’t known as the sweet and shy guy who’s can’t talk to young women. He’s a hot adult man with sexual urges. He still has a brain though but has become selective regarding the women he dates.
