Video Review: Guns N’ Roses “November Rain”

Lit in royal blue, Axl sits on the bed and snuffs out his cigarette. He puts some pills in his hands and swallows them. Throwing his head back, he drinks some water. Taking off his jacket, he sits up in bed.

People stand up and clap in The Orpheum Theater in Los Angeles, California. Axl plays the piano on stage. Slash, Izzy, Duff, Matt and Dizzy play their instruments. The conductor moves his arms in the orchestra pit. The two background singers dance as they sing into their microphones. Axl continues to play the piano on the sandy field.

A 10-year-old girl throws rose petals as she walks down the aisle in a church. Back in royal blue, Axl sleeps in bed. A twentysomething woman (Stephanie Seymour), carrying a bouquet and wearing a wedding dress, smiles as she walks down the aisle. Axl takes her hand and moves her veil.

Axl and the twentysomething sit down with Slash, Izzy, Duff, Matt and Dizzy at the Rainbow bar. Izzy lights up the twentysomething woman’s cigarette. They talk and toast to one another. Slash plays the guitar on the sandy field. People throw rice at Axl and the twentysomething woman as they leave the church. They drive off in the convertible. Back in royal blue, Axl walks by a gun shop. Axl and the twentysomething woman cut the cake at the reception. She licks the frosting off the knife as people clap. The twentysomething woman, Axl and his band mates clink glasses at the head table. The photographer takes photos as people dance. Several children run around. One of the children looks up to the sky. A priest reads from the Bible as the twentysomething woman lies in a coffin inside the church. The pallbearers carry her coffin down the aisle of the church and put it on the grass at the cemetery. While the priest talks, it starts to rain. Back in royal blue, Axl tosses and turns in bed. She throws the bouquet over the balcony. The white roses become red once they land in a puddle. At night, Axl stands by her grave, her bouquet in the coffin. Kneeling on the ground, he closes his eyes as the rain falls on his face.

Rating: 5/5

The twentysomething woman blows a kiss to the fortysomething man holding the video camera. She puts her arms around Axl and says he’s her forever. He kisses her and says they have to catch their plane. She checks the time on his watch and gasps. Axl says they have about an hour to get to the airport. She waves goodbye to the camera man and says she has to start her life with him.

Axl puts his foot on the pedal and speeds up as they drive in the city. She asks him it was supposed to rain again. He tells her it cleared up. A downpour of rain blinds him as he drives. She tells him to slow down. A car honks and she says she can only see the headlights. She lets out a scream as Axl slams on the brakes. The car spins in the road and hits a tree.

The pills couldn’t drown out her screams. Axl sits up in bed and drinks from a liquor bottle. He touches his wedding ring around his neck and looks up to the sky. She was an eternal bride. His eyes roll to the back of his head and he lies unconscious on the bed.
