Video Review: Paramore “Misery Business”

Hayley, Josh, Jeremy and Zac perform against a black background with “Riot” written on it in white. Hayley dances and sings into the microphone. Five 17-year-old girls, wearing cheerleader uniforms, stand in the hallway, talking. An 18-year-old young woman (Amy Paffrath) shoves them as she walks between them.

The 18-year-old young woman notices a 16-year-old’s girl long braid. She taps the 16-year-old girl on the shoulder and says “hello.” The 16-year-old puts her hand on her chest, replying “me?” The 18-year-old shows her the scissors and her braid in her hands. The 16-year-old girls feels the back of her head and screams.

A 16-year-old boy walks out of the nurse’s station, his arm in a sling and stares at the 18-year-old young woman. She pushes him to the floor. He rubs his arm and shouts in pain. She rolls her eyes as she continues to walk.  A 17-year-old boy touches the curls of a second 16-year-old’s hair as they stand by their locker. The 18-year-old puts her hand on the second 16-year-old girl’s face and kisses the 17-year-old boy. The second 16-year-old girl cries.

Hayley, Zac. Jeremy and Josh leave a classroom together. The 18-year-old young woman and Hayley smirk at one another.. Hayley takes out the cups in the 18-year-old young woman’s top. The 18-year-old young woman covers her chest. Hayley wipes the 18-year-old young woman’s makeup with a towel. They walk away as she cries.

The 18-year-old young woman mocks her classmates while the teacher is out of class. A 15-year-old girl tells her to shut up. The 18-year-old tells her to say it again. “If you do, I’ll kick your ass until you can’t see.” The 15-year-old girl looks down at her notebook. The third 16-year-old girl next to her whispers “thanks.” The 18-year-old walks over to the their desks and tells them to watch their backs.

Hayley reads a book during her free period. Zac puts his phone in front of her. Hayley says the 18-year-old young woman went too far. No one liked her. The only group of friends she did have kissed her butt. The school wouldn’t do anything about her, though. The 16-year-old had reported her to her teacher and they advised her to ignore it. Ignoring it was leaving the 18-year-old unaccountable for her behavior. Zac texts back they’ll take care of it.

The 18-year-old young woman bumps into Hayley and asks her about her boyfriends. She adds Hayley really gets around. Hayley laughs, saying she’s really one to talk. The 18-year-old young woman raises her hand to slap her. Hayley knocks her arm away and throws her against the locker. Zac, Josh, and Jeremy restrain her, saying it’s not worth the suspension. A teacher walks up to them and what’s to know what’s going on. Their classmates remain silent. Hayley says the 18-year-old woman was saying shit about her and she was defending herself. The teacher tells them to follow her to the principal’s office. Josh texts her, “we’ll back you up.” She puts her phone in her purse as she turns right in the hallway.
