An animated 7-year-old girl warns her 8-year-old brother to not to “make any noise.” They tiptoe and watch as Nat King Cole plays the piano in the family room. The 8-year-old boy looks out the window and points to the snow. In silhouette, they run in the backyard, staring at Santa Claus as he ice skates on a pond.
They jump into the sleigh and ride off with Santa in the sky. Santa turns his head and laughs when he sees them. Two gifts levitate by their heads. The 8-year-old boy opens his present and grins at the camera. He takes a picture of the 7-year-old girl posing with her gift. The 8-year-old girl watches a sixtysomething woman talks to a twentysomething man on a Skype call. The call disconnects and the sixtysomething woman cries.
She sees a limping puppy by a dumpster and flies off the sleigh. The 7-year-old boy follows behind her, his photographs falling. People pick up his photographs and smile. The 8-year-old girl finds paw prints and they look for the puppy. She bursts into tears on the snow. The twentysomething man carries the puppy, who has a cast on his leg. He gives the puppy to her. The puppy licks her face as the 8-year-old boy takes a picture with his camera.
The sixtysomething woman opens her door. The twentysomething man gives her a hug. The 8-year-old girl opens her present. It’s a collar and she puts it on the puppy. The kids and puppy sit on the bench with Cole as he plays the piano. The sixtysomething man and twentysomething woman listen in the corner. Santa stands by the fireplace and sways.
The 8-year-old girl kisses the puppy and says she’ll think of him forever. She pats him on the head and says for him to be a good boy for the twentysomething man. The twentysomething man says he’s hardly ever home and says the puppy is hers. Her eyes wide, she says, “really?” The twentysomething man nods and says the puppy adores her. They were meant to be.
The puppy follows the 8-year-old girl to the her room. Santa hands out presents to the twentysomething man, sixtysomething woman and Cole. The sixtysomething woman exclaims “oh my!” as she unwraps her new laptop. The twentysomething man’s eyes well up as he opens his gift: a key to his own car. Santa pats him on the shoulder and says he’s put in the hard work all year. Cole remarks that the journals will be put to good use.
The 8-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy hug Santa. Santa tells them they are kind people and says he has to get back to work. Cole shakes Santa’s hand and thanks him for taking care of his kids. Santa says they were a joy and tells everyone “merry Christmas” as he leaves.
